UN General Assembly Approves Resolution to Improve Mandate Processes
The resolution passed with 168 votes in favor, 4 against, and no abstentions, with Belarus, the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, Nicaragua, and Russia opposing it.
Under the resolution, the General Assembly agreed on a set of guiding principles to oversee the full lifecycle of all UN mandates.
"The resolution adopted today reflects a shared understanding of the full mandate lifecycle and a commitment to strengthen each step of it," said UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, noting that it brings "greater discipline, coherence and transparency to the creation of mandates."
Guterres added that the initiative promotes "clearer, more focused mandates" and supports a culture of continuous improvement based on evidence, accountability, and results. "This is a major step. But it is only the beginning," he said.
